The installation focuses on the exploiting process of the Garzweiler opencast coal mines, specifically examining the resulting sonic transformations in the surrounding soundscape.
The piece is composed by field recordings from the area, including the abandoned villages, those facing potential destruction, and vanished locations. The sounds encompass excavators, water pumps, power plant machinery, as well as the voices of protests, demonstrations, activists, and remaining village residents. The installation aims to convey contrasts between silence and noise, documenting the mining process and exploring themes like soundscape transformations, pollution, protest, and sound-activism. Through this sensory experience, viewers are prompted to reflect on the impacts of industrial activities and the power of sound in driving societal and environmental change.
